Psychology of Aging (Course Design/Map)

Psychology of Aging is an online course design and development project. I started with Course Learning Outcomes, Unit Names/Descriptions, and Specific Learning Outcomes to be covered in each unit.

All online courses are required to have a total of 135 hours, comprising time spent in class (assigned readings, Powerpoints, videos, eLearning modules, etc.) and time outside of class (quizzes, homework assignments, projects, and exams). Based on the number of units, I elected to structure the class in a 12-week format. Suggested weekly schedule is listed on the course map.

Each unit (module) is divided into subsections. At the unit level, students are provided a module overview, previewing the topics/sections that will be covered. At the module level, students are provided a section overview, detailing the activities they are responsible for completing and appropriate due dates.

Each module is designed to incorporate a diverse set of learning activities (assigned readings, Powerpoints, videos, eLearning modules, etc.). Activities are structure to offer "small bits of learning" and immediately afterwards students are presented with low-stakes opportunities to practice their learning in quizzes (which can be taken unlimited times, with the highest score counting toward their final grade) and student-to-student learning in the form of discussions.

Module-level learning activities culminate in a high-stakes end-of-module exam. Students are allowed 1 attempt for each Module Exam.

Students will also work on a semester-long interview project. There are discussions contained in every module to allow students to process and analyze the concepts that will need to be addressed in the Interview Project Paper.

There is one final cumulative exam at the conclusion of the course.

Research in Action (Technical Writing/Writing Sample)

I was commissioned to develop Research in Action features for inclusion in the first edition of the Life: The Essentials of Human Development (2018) textbook. I collaborated with the textbook author, Gabriela Martorell, to brainstorm appropriate topics that students may find interesting and engaging, and from there, I was tasked with tracking down relevant peer-reviewed articles to incorporate and develop into a 500-600 word submission.

Each Research in Action feature began with a vignette, to engage and support students in making connections between the textbook content and its current applications to the real word. They also included discussion questions at the end of the feature to be incorporated into class discussions and/or assignments. Each feature was formatted according to APA style guidelines.

Each of the 17 chapter features that were authored were published in the first edition of the text.

Tools used:

  • Microsoft Word

  • Adobe Acrobat DC
